Leadership Essentials: Leading Change
Change is a process of altering the way in which things are done. Change is necessary to allow organisations to continue to improve and to develop their procedures and systems, as well as to respond to other influences. All organisations need to respond to both internal drivers (such as over-reliance on existing methods) and external drivers (such as a change to legislation) to achieve goals and support continuous improvement. The success of your organisation will rely on the ability of the leadership team, and consequently of all employees, to respond effectively to the need for change as a result of internal or external influences and factors.
‘Leadership Essentials: Leading Change’ provides an overview of why leading change is essential for leadership capability and includes ‘Top Tips’ on how you can become a better leader by leading change effectively.
The Essentials leaflet is supported by three Spotlights that look at aspects of leading change in more detail to help you improve your leadership skills:
- What is Change?
- Models of Change Management
- Emotional Responses to Change
Spotlights
Spotlight on What is Change
"Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results"
Albert Einstein
Spotlight on Models of Change Management
"By far the biggest mistake people make when trying to change organizations is to plunge ahead without establishing a high enough sense of urgency in fellow managers and employees. This error is fatal because transformations always fail to achieve their objectives when complacency levels are high"
John P. Kotter (1966)
Spotlight on Emotional Responses to Change
"Accepting a vision of the future can be a challenging intellectual and emotional task. Our minds naturally generate dozens of questions. What will this mean for me? My friends? The organisation? What other alternatives are there? Are any of the other options better? If I’m going to have to operate differently can I do it?"
John P. Kotter (1966)
