Leadership Essentials: Creativity
Creativity in leadership means using your imagination to create ideas that potentially add value for the organisation and/or stakeholders. It is vital that you are able to lead the creative process and encourage idea generation so that your team and organisation find new and better ways to innovate and solve problems, especially when there is no previous experience of the issue. Creativity will also help your organisation to deal successfully with a rapidly changing economic, technological or cultural business environment.
‘Leadership Essentials: Creativity’ provides an overview of why a creative environment is essential for leadership capability and includes ‘Top Tips’ on how creativity can help you become a better leader.
The Essentials leaflet is supported by three Spotlights that look at creativity in more detail to help you improve your leadership skills:
- What is Creativity?
- The Creative Self
- Managing the Creative Process
Spotlights
Spotlight on What is Creativity
"It is hard to imagine a business, an institution, or a department that could not be profoundly energized, liberated, and humanized by the recognition of the breeding of original thought as its predominant organising principle."
Jerry Hirshberg (1998)
Spotlight on The Creative Self
"Many of the strategies for fostering creativity are mechanisms for jarring us loose from our moorings, for rethinking the ways we formulate our environment, assumptions, or relationships."
Jerry Hirshberg (1998)
Spotlight on Managing the Creative Process
"Since it is not possible to effect a plan without an idea, or an idea without a plan, they must be very much in sync with each other."
Jerry Hirshberg (1998)
