Leadership Essentials: Managing Meetings

Meetings can vary in their format, structure and tone, depending on the subject of the meeting and the culture of the organisation. Each type of meeting has a different goal, and the purpose of the meeting will affect who speaks, how much they speak, and the general tone of the meeting. Formal meetings are pre-planned and follow a set agenda overseen by a Chairperson, with a record taken in the form of minutes of the meeting. An informal meeting generally does not have these characteristics, although there may be a Chair and some informal notes may be taken.

‘Leadership Essentials: Managing Meetings’ provides an overview of why running meetings is essential for leadership capability and includes ‘Top Tips’ on how running meetings effectively can help you become a better leader.

The Essentials leaflet is supported by three Spotlights that look at running meetings in more detail to help you improve your leadership skills:

  • Types of Meeting
  • Planning
  • Managing Disruptive Meetings
