Lead & Learn Week 2026 Masterclass

Is Experience the Best Teacher?

Location: Online (via Zoom)

Open to all.

CPD hours (for IoL Members): 1

Host: Rachel Mullings

There is a great debate that has stood the test of time: do we learn best in the classroom or ‘on the job’?

As organisations seek to improve performance and support employee development, while employees look to upskill and advance their careers, understanding how different learning methods contribute to skill development and long-term career success has never been more important.

While formal training provides knowledge and structure, on-the-job learning offers real-world application and immediate relevance. Knowing when and how to use each approach can help individuals and organisations make better decisions about learning, development and performance, based on their specific needs and circumstances.

In this Lead & Learn Week 2026 Masterclass, Tayla Goodman, Head of Strategic Content at Netex Studio, puts both approaches under the microscope, to help leaders identify the most effective training methods that deliver the greatest impact for both the individual and the organisation.

Tayla Goodman is a behavioural psychologist and learning strategist who has spent more than two decades proving that capability is built, not bolted on. With a behavioural Psychology degree and accreditation across BPS Psychometrics, MTQ48 and Hogan, she has made human behaviour the foundation of everything she designs, from leadership promotion assessments at the London Fire Brigade to conflict-of-interest and conduct programmes inside global investment banks, to the leadership competency frameworks she built for the Metropolitan Police in response to the Baroness Casey Review.

Her conviction is simple: people change when learning means something to them, and lasting behaviour change comes from understanding what drives someone, not just telling them what to do. Today, as Head of Strategic Solutions at Netex Studio, she blends behavioural science with emotional intelligence, storytelling and emerging technology to design learning that genuinely shifts how people think, decide and perform.

With a strong background in membership, Rachel is passionate about building thriving membership communities and making your journey with us as smooth as possible. As a counsellor in her spare time, Rachel is particularly enthusiastic about The IoL’s focus on self-awareness through the MyLeadership tool.
