The Institute of Leadership CEO announces decision to step down

The Institute of Leadership has announced that its Chief Executive Officer, John Mark Williams, will step down from his role at the end of 2026, following six years leading the Institute. 

The announcement was made by John at Leadership Live, the Institute’s annual conference, where he reflected on his time at the Institute and the changing landscape for leaders and organisations. 

During his six years as CEO, John has played a significant role in shaping the Institute’s development and its contribution to the wider leadership community. His tenure has coincided with a period of profound change for leaders and organisations, as workplaces, expectations, technology and the wider operating environment have continued to evolve. 

Commenting on the announcement, Emrys Green, Chair of the Board of Trustees at the Institute of Leadership, said: 

“On behalf of the Board of Trustees, I would like to thank John for his contribution to the Institute over the past six years. He has led the organisation through a period of considerable change, both within the Institute and across the wider leadership landscape. 

“His commitment to leadership and to the role the Institute can play in supporting leaders and managers has been clear throughout his tenure. We are grateful for his leadership, his contribution to our community and the work he has done to strengthen the Institute’s position and purpose. 

“We wish him every success for the future and will ensure that we recognise his contribution appropriately as he approaches the end of his tenure.” 

John said: 

“It has been a privilege to lead the Institute of Leadership over the past six years and to work alongside so many committed colleagues, members, partners and people across the wider leadership community. 

“Leadership itself has changed considerably during my time as CEO. The expectations placed on leaders, the challenges organisations face and the opportunities available to us have all evolved, and I am proud of the role the Institute has played in that conversation. 

“I have decided that the end of this year is the right time for me to step down and begin the next chapter. I am incredibly grateful to everyone I have worked with during my time at the Institute and particularly proud of what we have achieved together. 

“The Institute has an important role to play in supporting better leadership, and I look forward to seeing it continue to make its contribution to the leadership community.” 

The Board of Trustees will make a further announcement about the future leadership of the Institute in due course. 

In the meantime, the Institute remains focused on its work with members, partners and the wider leadership community, including its programme of leadership development, insight and events.
