The Institute of Leadership and Belbin Partner to Help Leaders Get the Best from Their Teams

The Institute of Leadership has announced a new partnership with Belbin, bringing together two organisations with a shared commitment to helping leaders become more effective by better understanding the people they lead.
Most leaders know that success is rarely determined by the capability of one individual. It comes from how well people work together. Yet building a team where different personalities, perspectives and ways of working complement one another is one of the most challenging aspects of leadership.
That is where Belbin has become one of the world's most respected names in team development.
For more than 40 years, organisations across the globe have used Belbin's Team Roles framework to understand the different strengths and behaviours people bring to a team. Rather than focusing on personality labels or management styles, the framework helps leaders recognise how individuals naturally contribute, where they are likely to add the greatest value and how a team's collective strengths can be better balanced.
For leaders, those insights have real value. They support better conversations, more thoughtful delegation, stronger collaboration and teams that make the most of the different talents around the table.
It is a natural fit with The Institute of Leadership's approach to leadership development. The Institute exists to support leaders throughout their careers with practical learning, professional recognition and access to ideas that make a genuine difference in the workplace. This partnership adds another recognised, evidence-based framework to that offer, giving members practical tools they can use from day one.
As part of the collaboration, Belbin has developed an exclusive professional development module for members of The Institute of Leadership. Available through The Institute's MyLeadership+ learning platform, the new module explores the Belbin Team Roles framework and shows how leaders can apply it in everyday situations – from building balanced teams and improving communication to making better use of individual strengths and developing future talent.
The module is designed to be practical, accessible and immediately relevant, complementing the growing range of learning available through MyLeadership+. Together, they give members the opportunity to develop not only their own leadership capability but also their understanding of the teams they lead.
The partnership extends beyond digital learning. Over the coming months, The Institute and Belbin will work together on thought leadership, practical resources and events that explore how leaders can build stronger, more effective teams in a changing world of work.
Great leadership has always been about people. Understanding what motivates them, recognising what they each bring and creating an environment where different strengths work together remains one of the most important skills any leader can develop.
By combining The Institute's expertise in leadership development with Belbin's longstanding research into team behaviours and effectiveness, this partnership will give members fresh insights and practical approaches that help them lead with greater confidence and help their teams perform at their best.
John Williams, CEO of The Institute of Leadership said:
“The challenges facing today's leaders – and those they will face tomorrow – cannot be solved by expertise alone. They require leaders who understand how to bring together different perspectives, unlock individual strengths and create teams that are capable of adapting, innovating and performing in an increasingly complex world.
That's what makes this partnership with Belbin so valuable. By combining Belbin's globally recognised expertise in team dynamics with The Institute of Leadership's commitment to lifelong leadership development, we're giving our members practical, evidence-based insights that will help them build stronger, higher-performing teams and lead with greater confidence, whatever the future brings.”
Jo Keeler, Managing Director at Belbin said:
"We're delighted to strengthen our longstanding partnership with The Institute of Leadership through the introduction of a new professional development module and accompanying resources. The Institute has an outstanding reputation for supporting leaders at every stage of their development with practical, evidence-based approaches to leadership development. In bringing together The Institute’s expertise in leadership development and the Belbin Team Role framework, we look forward to providing leaders with practical insights into themselves and their teams, enabling them to build stronger working relationships, unlock collective potential and lead more effectively. We're excited about what this partnership will deliver in the months ahead."
