For those who have served in the Armed Forces, the transition into civilian life can be an exciting new chapter, but it can also bring uncertainty about how hard-earned military experience translates into the civilian workplace.

At the Institute of Leadership (IoL), we believe that the leadership skills developed through military service have enormous value across every sector. That is why we are proud to support the Armed Forces community throughout their leadership journey, from service transition into civilian careers, through to continued professional development and recognition.

Recognising the value of military leadership

Military service develops leaders in some of the most challenging environments imaginable.

Leading diverse teams, making critical decisions under pressure, managing risk, communicating with clarity, building resilience and operating effectively in complex and constantly changing circumstances are skills that have relevance far beyond the Armed Forces.

Yet, one of the challenges many service leavers and veterans face is communicating the value of those experiences in a way that civilian employers immediately recognise.

Through IoL membership, those leaving the Armed Forces and veterans can gain professional recognition for their leadership capability while accessing resources and opportunities to continue developing their skills.

For senior military leaders, Fellowship of the Institute of Leadership offers an opportunity to gain recognition for a distinguished leadership career.

Senior officers who have demonstrated sustained strategic leadership and made an outstanding contribution to the profession may be eligible to become Fellows of the Institute.

For those who have spent years leading people, shaping strategy and delivering impact at the highest levels, Fellowship can provide a meaningful way to recognise that experience within the wider leadership profession.
