Great Leaders Don't Build Great Teams by Accident

Every leader has experienced it.

You bring together a group of capable, talented people. On paper, it should work. Yet some teams click almost immediately, while others struggle to find their rhythm. It's rarely because people aren't capable. More often, it's because they work differently, communicate differently and approach challenges from different perspectives.

Recognising those differences – and knowing how to harness them – is one of the most valuable skills a leader can develop.

It's also why The Institute of Leadership is delighted to announce a new partnership with Belbin

For more than four decades, Belbin has helped organisations across the world understand what makes teams successful. Its Team Roles framework has become one of the most widely recognised approaches to understanding how people contribute within a team, helping leaders see beyond job titles and personalities to recognise the strengths, behaviours and perspectives that each individual brings.

For leaders, those insights can transform the way teams work.

Understanding why one person naturally generates ideas while another instinctively turns those ideas into action. Recognising who asks the difficult questions that improve decisions, who brings people together when relationships become strained, and who quietly ensures that standards never slip. Great teams need all of these contributions, but they don't always recognise or value them equally.

Leadership is about more than understanding yourself; it's about understanding the people around you. The better leaders know the strengths within their teams, the better equipped they are to create environments where individuals can succeed, collaboration becomes easier and performance improves naturally.

That philosophy sits at the heart of everything The Institute of Leadership aims to achieve. We are committed to supporting leaders throughout their careers with practical learning, professional recognition and evidence-based development that helps them become more confident, more effective and more capable of leading others.

Our partnership with Belbin is another step in that commitment.

As part of the collaboration, Belbin has developed an exclusive learning module for members of The Institute of Leadership, available through the MyLeadership+ learning platform. The module introduces the Belbin Team Roles framework and, more importantly, shows leaders how to apply it in everyday practice.

The nine Belbin Team Roles grouped into Thinking, Social and Task roles.

From building balanced teams and improving communication to delegating more effectively and developing future talent, the learning focuses on practical leadership challenges that managers face every day. Members will be able to explore the framework at their own pace and immediately apply what they learn within their own teams.

This is just the beginning of the partnership. Over the coming months, The Institute and Belbin will work together on thought leadership, practical resources and learning opportunities that explore how leaders can better understand the people they lead and create teams where everyone has the opportunity to contribute at their best.

There is no single blueprint for a successful team because there is no single blueprint for people.

But leaders who understand the different strengths around them are better placed to build trust, unlock potential and create teams that achieve more together. We believe that is a skill worth investing in, and we're delighted to be working with Belbin to help more leaders develop it.
