From Experience to Impact: Mentoring Future Leaders

Location: Online (via Zoom)

Open to Institute members.

CPD hours (for IoL Members): 0.75

Mentoring is more than sharing advice. It is a powerful exchange that can build confidence, strengthen professional relationships and support meaningful career development.

Research has linked mentoring with positive outcomes including increased motivation, job and career satisfaction, organisational commitment and professional development. The benefits work both ways, with mentors also reporting greater job satisfaction and opportunities to strengthen their own leadership capabilities.

Join Rachel Mullings, Membership Manager at The Institute of Leadership, and Chris Murray, Director of PLD, for a practical Masterclass exploring MyMentoring, an exclusive benefit available to members of The Institute.

In this session, you'll discover:

  • How mentoring can support your personal and professional development

  • Benefits of becoming a mentor or mentee

  • A guided tour of the MyMentoring platform

Continue the conversation on National Mentoring Day

This Masterclass forms the practical part of our two-part National Mentoring Day activity.

On 27 October, we'll release a special podcast featuring Sarah Hawke FIoL, Trustee of The Institute of Leadership, and her mentee. Together, they will share an honest insight into their mentoring relationship, the positive exchange between mentor and mentee, and the outcomes they have experienced.

Join the Masterclass, explore MyMentoring and discover how one conversation could become the beginning of a powerful professional relationship.

A multidisciplinary meta-analysis found that mentoring was associated with positive behavioural, motivational, relational, wellbeing and career outcomes. Research has also found that mentors can benefit through increased job satisfaction, organisational commitment and career success.

The power of mentoring

  • Mentoring supports a wide range of positive outcomes, including improved motivation, relationships, wellbeing, performance and career development. This finding comes from a multidisciplinary analysis of mentoring across workplace, academic and youth settings.

  • Employees who have been mentored tend to report greater job satisfaction, career satisfaction and organisational commitment than those without mentors. They also experience career benefits such as higher compensation and more promotions, although the effects on these objective measures are generally smaller.

  • Mentoring benefits mentors too. A meta-analysis found that mentors reported higher job satisfaction and organisational commitment than people who did not mentor others. Providing career mentoring was also associated with mentors’ own job performance and career success.

  • Mentoring can help people build stronger professional networks. In a randomised mentoring trial involving female economists, participants who received mentoring gained, on average, three additional co-authors, 1.6 more publications and 43 additional citations before tenure.

  • Mentoring can help address barriers to career progression. The same randomised programme for female economists increased participants’ publication rates and successful grant applications, with later research also identifying improved prospects of tenure in leading economics departments.

  • A major analysis of 70 youth mentoring studies, covering 25,286 young people, found a statistically significant positive effect across academic, behavioural, social and emotional outcomes. The average participant was 12 years old.

  • Quality matters. Youth mentoring programmes tend to achieve better outcomes when mentors receive supervision, can adapt their support to the individual, and build relationships based on trust and respect.

Chris is the Co-founder and director of Perform Learn Develop Ltd (PLD). PLD provides mentoring and coaching platforms for lots of different organisations, whether they be companies, professional bodies or charities.

PLD was founded with the development of a mentoring software platform. This marked the start of their drive to find new ways to connect people in knowledge sharing relationships. They knew from personal experience how powerful a successful mentoring relationship could be in transferring skills from one person to another.

Scaling that up through online mentoring communities means mentees are able to connect with the most relevant mentor for their needs irrespective of location. The addition of rich online learning support also means mentors and mentees can get the very best from their mentoring relationships.

As PLD continued to develop it became clear just how many organisations, across varied sectors, could drive significant benefits by running a mentoring programme on the mentoring platform. PLD has operated for just over 14 years now, helping to create thousands of successful mentoring relationships.

With a strong background in membership, Rachel is passionate about building thriving membership communities and making your journey with us as smooth as possible. As a counsellor in her spare time, Rachel is particularly enthusiastic about The IoL’s focus on self-awareness through the MyLeadership tool.
