Five ways to make your listening count
Five ways to make your listening count

In busy workplaces, conversations can become something to squeeze in between meetings, rather than valuable opportunities to really understand someone else's perspective. How we listen can shape whether people feel valued, whether they feel comfortable raising concerns, and the quality of the decisions we make.
Five ways to make your listening count
1. Give the conversation some space
Put the phone down. Close the laptop. Stop trying to fit a meaningful conversation into the gaps between other meetings. If something matters, give it the time it deserves.
2. Listen past your first reaction
When something makes you defensive, don't rush to explain yourself. Pause. Reflect back what you've heard. Make sure you understand the point before deciding how you want to respond.
3. Let people see that you're with them
Good listening is visible. Give people your attention, don't constantly look at the clock or screen, and use questions and summaries to show that you are following what they are saying. But don't turn it into a performance.
4. Know when you need to step back
You won't be at your best in every conversation. If you're tired, distracted or already carrying too much, recognise it. Sometimes the most respectful thing you can do is say, “I want to give this the attention it deserves. Can we come back to it when I can?”
5. Don't leave people wondering what happened
Before a conversation ends, be clear about what happens next. What will you do? What won't you do? When will you come back to them? Closing the loop is one of the simplest ways to show that listening wasn't just an exercise.
The leadership takeaway
Listening isn't measured by how long you stay quiet. It's measured by whether people feel heard and whether what they told you makes a difference to what happens next.
